In a world now dominated by smartphones and tablets, workers are turning to these devices more than ever to organise their daily lives.  Putting aside the generic email and social networking applications - here are five handy free apps which may benefit FIFO workers – and anyone else in employed in the mining industry.

Mining Jobs+ (iOS/Android)

Doing pretty much what it says – this app was developed by local company Smart Media Innovations – and is designed to be a portal for the latest mining jobs available at worksites around Australia and overseas.  The job listings are updated daily across several different categories.  There’s also career advice, interview tips and a bunch of other resources designed to help jobseekers.

Pocket Blast Guide (iOS/Android)

Forget lugging around huge manuals - Orica have designed a handy guide to assist you when you’re performing a complex blast at your worksite.  The app gives you access to information revolving around blast calculations and conversions, along with automatic updates and the ability to access information offline when you’re out of mobile reception.

This app could quite possibly become your new best friend.  It allows you to set multiple alarms depending on what type of shift you are rostered on for, and if your friends also use the app, you can see what their roster is like as well.  On top of this, if you’re looking for a new housemate, you can check out properties available for rent and the ad poster’s roster – so you can see if they’d be a right match for you.

WebJet (iOS)

Need to suss out your options for the best flight back home?  Webjet lets you do just that – comparing prices and times for all four of the major airlines – Qantas, Jetstar, Tiger and Virgin Australia.  You can also book your flights through the app if you like – but that will incur a surcharge.

TuneIn Radio (iOS/Android)

If you’re after some tunes to listen to at work, or don’t want to miss your favourite radio program, TuneIn is here to help.  Widely regarded as the best radio app out there, TuneIn allows you to stream pretty much any radio station around the world.  You have the option to replay the last 10 minutes of the show, and also set alarms so you wake up to your favourite station.
