WA-based Skywest Airlines has signed a three-year deal with mining giant Rio Tinto to transport workers to and from the company’s mines in the state’s Pilbara region. The airline, which is soon to be bought by Virgin Australia – will provide provide flights to Boolgeeda for workers at Rio Tinto's Brockman 4 mine and other surrounding mines operated by the company.

The first services will commence before the end of the month, with Skywest aiming to eventually provide up to eight return services a week for workers. In announcing the deal on Monday, Skywest Executive Chairman Jeff Chatfield told Finance News Network the contract “underpins Skywest’s scheduled Fly In Fly Out charter business, providing a growing and long term revenue stream.”

As previously reported, Virgin Australia announced a $98.7 million takeover bid for SkyWest Airlines in October, as part of its strategy to grow the business in the FIFO Market. Virgin is currently awaiting regulatory approval for the deal. If successful, it will absorb SkyWest into its business, and all SkyWest flights will be re-branded and operated by Virgin Australia.
