Push for more FIFO flights

The co-ordinator of the Sunshine Coast Mining and Gas Association has called on local FIFO workers to speak up if they want a fly-in fly-out service from the region's airport.

David Wrigley told The Gympie Times the local mining community was "tired" of relying on the flight schedules from the two major airlines to cater for the needs of FIFO workers.

"The companies are saying 'great' but there's no commitment from them," he said

"People are listening but no one is doing anything. I personally think there's a monopoly in Australian airlines. They're all scared of Qantas and Virgin."

More than 250 participants supported a FIFO service from Sunshine Coast airport in a survey conducted late last year.

However, Mr Wrigley said despite these results, further action from the community has been minimal since then.

"At this moment we're not speaking loud enough," he said.

"I've done my bit. We've put our hand up saying we want FIFO...you'd think we could get one flight out a week. That would be a start."

Mr Wrigley said adding a FIFO service to Sunshine Coast Airport would deliver huge benefits to the local economy.

"If you've got 500 guys working, if they live here and earn a minimum of $120,000, that's $60 million to your economy annually," he said.

Here at Minetalk, we reckon it's about time a FIFO service was added to Sunshine Coast Airport to help workers in the region - and we're throwing our support behind Mr Wrigley's efforts and the local campaign to help make it happen.

Is the mining boom in Australia over?

Is the mining boom in Australia over?

No, it's just media hype.
Yes as a result of lower demand.
Still plenty of resources.
There will be a second boom.
