What’s the Minetalk Jobs Board all about?

For years, there have been calls for a dedicated job search engine for people looking for employment the Australian mining industry.

What’s the job market like at the moment?

It varies between resource sectors, but in a nutshell, there are a lot of jobs going around!
As many as 120,000 new jobs are expected to be on offer in Queensland and New South Wales within the next decade, according to a Federal Government report.

That estimate from the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics takes into account the number of workers needed to build and operate 190 projects, including mines, gas developments and infrastructure in the two states, as well as for projects currently under construction. In the NT, GlencoreXstrata has been given the green light for its $360 million expansion of its McArthur River mine, a project which is set to create an extra 300 jobs.

And while we’re on the topic, the NSW government has recently agreed to work with the Minerals Council of NSW to provide more jobs for Aborigines.

On the flipside, there are a lot of people looking for mining jobs. The Australian Coal Association says nationally about 9,000 jobs have been cut from the industry in the past 15 months, with falling commodity prices and rising operating costs to blame.

Advice for job seekers?

Matt Roberts, Operations Manager at Mining Job Search Ltd, says “employers are looking for different skills for very different roles, so be sure to tailor your CV to focus on the specific role you are after, and back it up confidently at interview”.

Is the mining boom in Australia over?

No, it's just media hype.
Yes as a result of lower demand.
